Have you noticed your decisions taking longer & feeling heavier lately?
Maybe your patience is getting shorter. You’re a bit more reactive than usual. And your mind just feels noisier than it used to…
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And I’d bet it’s not a strategy problem.
In this episode of the Marketing Minds Podcast, my guest Angus Nelson kicked things off with something that stopped me in my tracks: dentists are seeing more & more cracked teeth from people grinding & clenching their jaws while they work & sleep.
(In a 2021 American Dental Association survey, more than 70% of dentists said they were seeing more teeth grinding & clenching, & 63% were seeing more cracked teeth!)
Stress is literally showing up in our teeth.
Here’s what most people don’t realize: Most Leadership Problems are actually Nervous System Problems in Disguise.
And that’s exactly what Angus is an expert in. He’s the author of Neuro Resilient Leader & helps executives at companies like Cisco & FedEx lead with clarity under pressure.
I first met Angus at one of the pre-parties for Social Media Marketing World, and one thing that really struck me is that he’s been coaching Michael Stelzner, the founder of Social Media Marketing World, for the last 7 years!
Honestly, this was one of those episodes where I was the student & I took a LOT of notes. So today, I want to share my biggest takeaways with you. (You can watch the full episode on YouTube here, but first, let’s get into the lessons!)

The Market Doesn’t Reward Effort Anymore. It Rewards Regulation.
For years, hustle culture told us the answer was simple: Work harder. Grind more. Push through.
But Angus said something on the episode that I can’t stop thinking about:
The market doesn’t reward effort anymore. It rewards regulation.
AI can process faster than any of us ever will. But AI can’t stay calm in chaos. Our humanity, when it’s properly regulated, becomes the most competitive advantage we have in our businesses.
That’s what being a Neuro Resilient Leader is all about, & Angus breaks it down into 3 parts:
1. Neuro: Your Wiring
This is the mental, emotional & identity side of you. Your electrical system. Your supercomputer. It’s the foundation underneath everything you do as a leader.
2. Resilience: Your Suspension System
Most people treat resilience like white-knuckling through a hard situation with pure grit until you get to the other side.
Angus sees it differently. True resilience is more like the suspension on your car – four independent shocks reading the road & adjusting to smooth out the ride.
You’ll never get rid of the bumps in the road. But you can equip yourself in how you react to them.
3. Leader: More than a Title
Leadership requires people following you, & the best teams follow willingly, not just for a paycheck. They can only do that when their leader is well-regulated & walks into the room with quiet confidence.
And here’s the Trojan Horse: it’s not just about leading a company. It’s about leading your own life – taking back your personal power, your agency & your sovereignty.
The Success Trap: Is Your Business Outgrowing You?
Every inflection point in your business demands a bigger version of you.
A new round of funding. An exit. Hiring new staff. Moving into a new industry. (Or for a lot of us, scaling up our ad spend & bringing on a bigger team!)
And almost every time, it comes with resistance. It feels wonky. Fear, hesitation, even imposter syndrome start to creep in.
Here’s what Angus sees over & over: Most entrepreneurs don’t have a smarts problem. They don’t have a systems problem. They know their ROAS & their numbers are right there on the spreadsheet.
They have a Capacity Problem.
In his book, he calls this the Success Trap, because what got you here will keep you here if you don’t adjust.
Here are the warning signs to watch for:
-
Your decision quality starts to decline
-
Communication starts to feel harder
-
Your patience gets shorter
-
Your relationships start absorbing the stress
-
Your team starts feeling the tension
-
Growth starts to feel heavier instead of more rewarding
If you’re seeing a few of these, it doesn’t mean you’re not good enough or that you don’t have what it takes.
Angus compares it to a super overprotective parent trying to keep you safe. At your old level, you knew what to expect. At the new level, part of you starts asking: What will this require of me? Who do I have to become?
If you haven’t prepared for that ahead of time, that’s when you start to sabotage, shrink back or get more volatile, usually without even realizing it.
So the business grows, but the leader doesn’t grow with it.
I’ll be honest, I’ve been there. I think every entrepreneur has at some point – the business takes off & you have to scramble to catch up.
How to Check How You’re Really Showing Up
The tricky part is that the people closest to you usually know how you’re showing up long before you do. They just may not feel safe telling you.
So pay attention to how people feel around you. Are they closing off? Withdrawing? Saying “No problem, forget it, it’s no big deal”?
Their reactions are a mirror.
As Angus put it, the power of communication isn’t saying what you want to say, the way you want to say it. It’s saying it in a way other people can receive it. If people aren’t receiving what you’re saying, it’s less about them & more about you.
That’s when you need a trusted confidant (a coach, mentor, therapist, close friend or your spouse) who has permission to give it to you straight. Someone who will point out the spinach in your teeth!
And If You’re Growing Faster than Your Business?
Then there’s the opposite mismatch: You’re doing the personal work & you can see the vision, but the results haven’t shown up yet.
Angus’s advice is to think in Lead Indicators vs. Lag Indicators. The work you’re putting in today is the lead indicator. The results are the lag.
It’s a lot like launching a new YouTube Ad campaign – you don’t shut it off on day 2 while the algorithm is still learning!
The flywheel has already started. Stay clear on your lead indicators & wait for the fuel to hit the tank. Because when it does, that’s when you get acceleration. 🚀

A Single Typo Shouldn’t Cost You a Sale

A shopper types “running shos” and gets nothing back. Another types “red waterprof trail runners under $150” and hits the same wall. Both knew what they wanted.
Traditional site search relies on exact keyword matching, leaving shoppers stranded at “0 results found” screens.
Gladly understands what shoppers mean, typos and all. Instead of a dead end, they get products that fit what they asked for and a conversation that keeps them shopping.

Dark Energy vs. Light Energy
This was one of my favorite parts of the conversation, because it hit close to home.
For a lot of my journey, I was driven by achievement. A singular focus, blind optimism & massive grit. Hustle culture at its finest. I set big goals & I achieved them.
Then, after hitting several of those big goals, I found myself asking: Wait a second… What about fulfillment? What about giving back & making a bigger impact?
Angus put words to exactly what I was feeling.
Most entrepreneurs start with what he calls “Dark Energy.” We’re trying to prove something, compensate for something or validate ourselves. It’s like wandering through a dark room looking for the light, hoping the next goal, the next milestone or the next win will finally make us feel like we’ve arrived.
It’s exhausting, because everything you’re counting on is outside of you.
“Light Energy” is walking into that same dark room & lighting the match yourself. Your meaning, your contribution & your sense of abundance already exist inside of you.
Here’s the fascinating part: Ambition looks exactly the same in both. You can work just as hard. The difference is where it’s coming from.
And this shows up in your marketing more than you’d think:
-
When an ad campaign crushes it, you don’t think “I’m amazing!”
-
When it flops, you don’t think “I’m the worst!”
-
You just check the data, find the mistake & course correct
For me personally, growing in my faith & focusing on something bigger than myself has been a huge part of that shift. Whatever that looks like for you, the principle is the same: Lead from the inside out.
And when you do, here’s what Angus says starts to happen:
-
Your decisions get clearer & you stop second-guessing every single one
-
Your team becomes more accountable, because you finally let them own things
-
Your marriage & relationships stop paying the price for your ambition
-
Your business moves faster, because you’re no longer trapped in overthinking
You become confident, not in exactly how things will play out, but in who you are & that you’ll figure it out.
The 2 Questions That Turn Any Setback into a Breakthrough
Angus put it bluntly on the episode: “You don’t have business problems. You have personal problems, emotional problems & relationship problems that all show up in your business.”
That’s why he calls business the biggest personal development tool on the planet. It doesn’t care about your feelings. It just shows you exactly who you need to become.
He also said something that’s stuck with me ever since: If you ask the wrong questions, you’ll always get the wrong answers.
He kicks off every coaching conversation with what he calls the “Spice Girls Principle” (if you know the song, you know the question, haha). It’s all about getting crystal clear on what you truly want. Not just the destination, but the direction.
Then come the 2 questions I think every entrepreneur should keep in their back pocket:
Question #1: “Who Must I Become?”
Use this one when you hit a new level. The direction you want will map out the requirements. Do I need more discipline? Better sleep? Better self-talk? A coach or mentor to speak into my life?
Question #2: “What Does This Make Possible?”
Use this one when things go sideways. Sometimes a setback is actually freeing you up for something else: a new opportunity, a new direction or a new market you never would have explored otherwise.
Angus shared a powerful example. One of his clients, Nick, owns a solar company. His business partner checked out & left Nick holding all the debt. When they first talked, Nick wanted to burn the whole thing down.
So Angus asked him what he really wanted.
Nick’s answer? “Peace.”
Instead of burning it down, they reinvented it. Nick released the need for a partner, rewrote the story he’d been telling himself about his past, got into meditation & made big investments in A-level players.
Within 12 months, he was on track for $1M in ARR. 3 years in, he was at $3M. And in 2025, he crossed $5M!
That’s what becomes possible when the leader grows with the business.
This reminds me a lot of the “Win or Learn” Entrepreneur’s Mindset I’ve shared with you before. I even had coins made for my team with “Win” on one side & “Learn” on the other, because learning IS winning.
“What does this make possible?” takes it one step further. It doesn’t just help you learn from a setback. It helps you spot the opportunity hiding inside of it.
^^ Write those 2 questions down somewhere you’ll see them every day. Seriously.
AI Can Process Faster, But It Can’t Stay Calm
Of course, we had to talk about AI!
Angus made a point I love: There’s never been a technological shift in history that showed up ready to teach you how to use it. You can literally ask it “How do I do this?” & it will walk you through it.
In just 4 months, Angus went from knowing a little bit of HTML to building his own website, running his book launch & replacing $220 worth of software subscriptions with apps he built himself using Claude Code.
He’s not a “techno guru.” He just kept asking questions & dropping in screenshots.
You don’t have to know this stuff to use it.
And if fear is holding you back, remember when people said “I don’t want a stranger sleeping in my bed” or “I don’t want to get into a stranger’s car”? Then Airbnb & Uber came along. We figured it out, & we’ll figure this out too.
Here’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot: AI is coming for the entry level & the middle of the pack in almost every industry. That pushes all of us to step up & become true experts.
The winners will combine Human + AI. Angus runs his coaching call transcripts through AI (with his clients’ permission) to catch patterns in their Clarity, Capacity & Composure that he might otherwise miss.
We do something similar at AdOutreach. Our AI YouTube Ad Script Writer is trained on our top 400 performing scripts of all time. It doesn’t replace our copywriters. It gives them a head start, so they start miles down the road & take it the rest of the way.
AI can process faster. But your regulated, human judgment is still your biggest competitive advantage.

Remember Who You Are
Angus closed out the episode with a line I want to leave you with:
Confidence isn’t what you need most for the future. What you need is conviction in who you are & what you’re building.
So here’s my challenge to you this week. Try what Angus calls being a “10-Minute Leader”:
Spend 10 minutes every morning reminding yourself who you are: your power, your purpose, how far you’ve come & what you’re building. (His vision is to get 10 Million Leaders spending 10 Minutes a Day to become the 10.0 Version of Themselves!)
Before you flip on the news or start scrolling (which is mostly other people’s agendas), feed your mind something powerful: encouraging music, meditation, visualization, breathwork or just moving your body.
And if you really want to lock it in, grab a dry erase marker & write it on your bathroom mirror. That way it’s the first thing you see when you wake up & the last thing you see before bed.
While everyone else is losing their minds in the chaos, you get to stay in a place of Clarity, Capacity & Composure.
That’s the Neuro Resilient Leader. 💯
