ChatGPT Ads are officially here. I just got early access to the OpenAI Ads Manager, & I've already built out my very first campaign inside of it.

Why I Dropped Everything for ChatGPT Ads
Let me give you the real reason I'm so fired up about this.
I spent $7.7M+ of my own money on ads. I got in early on YouTube Ads & rode that wave to tens of millions in revenue – not because I was smarter than everyone else, but because I was EARLIER than everyone else.
That's the entire game. I call it First-Mover Math.
When a new ad platform opens up, there's a window where there's almost no competition, costs are low & the algorithm is hungry for advertisers. The platform WANTS you to succeed because it needs to prove the ads work. That's the Ground-Floor Window.
We've all said it before – “I wish I got in early on Google Ads” or “I wish I'd run Facebook Ads when clicks were 10 cents.”
Well, ChatGPT Ads are that opportunity right now. This is a brand new Blue Ocean, & the window is wide open.
The difference between the people who win & the people who watch isn't talent. It's timing. So let me show you how it works.
Step 1: Getting Access & Setting Up Conversions
Getting in starts at ads.openai.com – you click “Start Now,” verify your account, & you're into the Ads Manager dashboard.
Before you ever build a campaign, you need to set up your conversions first. If you've run Meta or Google Ads, this will feel familiar – it's a web pixel that tracks the people coming to your site so you can measure (& eventually optimize for) the actions that matter.
You create your pixel, then create conversion events – things like leads, registrations & booked appointments. You drop the pixel code on your “thank you” page, & now ChatGPT can track exactly what's happening.
Quick note: this is the kind of thing a developer can set up in minutes – or honestly, an AI tool can walk you right through it now too.

Step 2: Understanding How These Ads Actually Show Up
Here's what makes ChatGPT Ads different from anything that came before.
When someone asks ChatGPT a question, it gives its answer – & then at the bottom, it can recommend your business with a link. That's the ad.
Think about how powerful that is. The user already has buying intent. They asked a question. ChatGPT answered & then pointed them to YOU. That's a fundamentally different – & in my opinion, incredibly valuable – way for an ad to appear.
This is why understanding the platform BEFORE you build matters. You're not interrupting someone scrolling. You're showing up at the exact moment they're looking for a solution.
Step 3: Building the Campaign (The Settings That Matter)
The structure will feel familiar – Campaign → Ad Group → Ads, just like every other platform.
Here are the key things I learned setting up my own campaign that you'll want to know going in:
➡️ Objective: Right now the default is Clicks (or Reach). Conversions aren't fully rolled out yet – but I just got word I'm getting early access to conversion-optimized campaigns within days. When that option is live for you, ALWAYS optimize for conversions. That's what we actually care about as business owners.
➡️ Budget: Set a daily budget & monitor it. Heads up – the minimum daily spend is $25. Good to know before you dive in.
➡️ Max CPC Bid: The default is $3.50 per click. I noticed that if you drop below $3, it warns you it “may not deliver.” So start around $3 to $3.50, or bid slightly higher if you want extra initial traction.
➡️ Context Hints (this is the big one): This is where ChatGPT Ads break from every platform before it. Instead of pre-built audiences, you train the AI with natural language – telling it exactly who you want to reach. For my campaign promoting a YouTube Ads Strategy PDF, I put in things like “YouTube Ads,” “Google Ads,” “YouTube marketing,” “YouTube Ads strategy.” Now when someone asks ChatGPT about the best way to run YouTube Ads, my ad can show up right in the answer.
That last piece is the real magic. You're essentially describing your ideal client in plain English & letting the AI do the matching.
Step 4: The Creative (& a Speed Hack)
Right now ChatGPT Ads run as image ads – a headline, a description & a square image (at least 256×256, but go higher for quality).
Two things I'd recommend:
First, don't launch with just one ad. Create several variations – different headlines, descriptions & images – & let the AI determine which performs best.
Second, here's the speed hack: I used AdsCreator.com to generate my ad images. You paste in a URL & it creates image ads for you using AI. That means you can spin up 10 variations fast & test them all instead of agonizing over one. Creative Velocity wins on new platforms.
One more tip – watch your character counts. Headlines can truncate after ~25 characters (especially on mobile), so front-load your most important words.
Then you review, hit “Create Campaign,” & you're live. Your first ChatGPT ad campaign is officially running. 🚀
